PrEP4Youth Designathon 2022!

Background

Youth (ages 14-24 years old) are at increased risk of new HIV infection, and experience high rates of HIV-related deaths. Ending the HIV epidemic among youths by 2030 must be more than just a slogan; it requires us to actively engage, mobilize and support youth as leaders and agents of social change to make this a reality. It is time to put YOU(th) at the front and center in the response to HIV to lead your own solutions.

Over the years, significant efforts have been made to end the HIV epidemic. Such that, powerful new tools have helped us in reducing HIV transmission and moved us along a path to ending the HIV epidemic. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is one of such potentially lifesaving tools. PrEP is a once per day pill that people take to prevent HIV infection. However, what we do not know is how to effectively promote PrEP use among at-risk people and where and how to deliver PrEP services among at-risk youth in Nigeria. It is important to develop innovative solutions that will overcome barriers to PrEP, use such as stigma, lack of access to services, lack of awareness, and misinformation. We aim to foster a solutions-focused community to generate and refine novel ideas that can transform this urgent public health challenge, particularly for Nigerian youth.

About PrEP4Youth Designathon

Our PrEP4Youth Designathon is a 72-hour, interactive event where individuals work collaboratively on real solutions to aid in ending the HIV epidemic. The designathon seeks to provide young innovators access to a community of research experts, health leaders, and entrepreneurs to support and build their concept. If you have an existing solution that addresses the designathon’s focus and want to further develop it with the help of experts, please click the button below to complete an application. More information about our previous designathons can be found here and here. We encourage Nigerian youth of all backgrounds and disciplines to apply!

Designathons are intensive, time-bounded, co-creation events where individuals work in teams to develop solutions to a problem.

Anyone that this project resonates with can contribute solutions to the problem (question being asked). This includes those who are creative and passionate about transforming healthcare delivery to increase PrEP use; individuals with multidisciplinary expertise, including but not limited to technology, business, marketing, design, art, and health who can provide valuable insight as an innovator or contributor; and those who have lived experience(s) of the challenge or communities they wish to serve.

Up to 15 of the most promising teams of innovators will be chosen to participate. Applications will be solicited from those with original solutions. The designathon will conclude in a final pitch competition with monetary prizes. However, the event does not end at the designathon. Each idea and team in the designathon are invited to be part of the 4 Youth by Youth network for ongoing support. Finalist teams will also have the opportunity to present their prototypes at the Annual National Conference hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research in November 2022.
